The EU suspends work on anti-greenwashing regulations.
On 23 June, the European Commission withdrew from further work on the so-called Green Claims Directive (a draft regulation that was to regulate the use of environmental claims by companies, e.g. ‘climate neutral’ or ‘100% biodegradable’).
What does this mean for the cosmetics industry?
No new obligations to prove ‘green’ claims (at least for now).
What next? The Commission suggests that it may return to the proposal if the provision concerning micro-businesses is removed.
Although the directive will not come into force in the near future, be cautious when formulating environmental marketing messages. No Green Claims Directive = no consistent, comprehensive regulations that would comprehensively regulate the issue of so-called green claims. However, this certainly does not mean that communication is voluntary. Recently, many regulations have been introduced to limit the phenomenon of greenwashing. Although they concern selected aspects and operate indirectly, they should not be underestimated. The issue of greenwashing remains the focus of attention for regulators and consumers.
