Counterfeit products in the beauty industry – a growing threat to health, the market and brand reputation.

The scale of trade in counterfeit cosmetics is growing, and this problem is no longer solely an economic issue. Today, it poses a serious threat to consumer health and the credibility of companies in the beauty sector.

According to EUIPO data (2024):

The cosmetics industry in the EU loses €3 billion annually due to counterfeiting.

This amounts to 5% of total sales in the sector.

In Poland, losses are estimated at €140 million.

The result? Over 30,000 jobs lost annually.

A report by Which? (2025) showed that almost two-thirds of cosmetics purchased from third-party sellers on platforms such as Amazon, eBay, TikTok Shop and Vinted are counterfeit – often containing toxic substances. Their use can lead to skin infections, allergies and even chemical burns.

Although production still takes place outside the EU, the repackaging and assembly of counterfeit goods already takes place in transit countries, including Poland. Counterfeit products are sold faster than law enforcement agencies are able to respond.
