Amendment of the Press Law Act signed by the President

On November 15, 2017, the President signed the amendment to the Press Law Act.

The amendment requires journalists to inform the interviewee about its right to authorize the statement. According to the new law, the authorization should be made within 6 hours from the time of receipt of the text in the case of daily newspapers and 24 hours in the case of magazines. If the authorization is not made within the stated time limits, the statement is deemed as authorized without reservation.

According to the amendment, publication of a statement without authorization will constitute a misdemeanour threatened with a fine. However, the journalist who publishes a statement identical to that given by the interviewee will not be subject to a penalty specified in the Act.

The law will come into force in 14 days after publication in the Journal of Laws of the Republic of Poland.
